We use java in the database programming course with jdbc. We use eclipse and maven and I give a 5-minute introduction and a boilerplate, after the students used a web-based java ide in the previous year.
I will not subject my students to managing compilation, classpaths, and dependencies to get on with jdbc (and other abstraction layers).
This sounds strange, but learning how to compile or run a program is, in my opinion, not necessary in the academic context, if that's not one of the goals of that special subject.
